Addendum: Introspection

So I was walking in to work this morning listening to that song. Repeatedly. Something about it just crawls around inside my head and makes itself at home.

I think I know why. It is a upbeat song, yet still meloncholy. The ides in the song are powerful, and the ending is sort of a downbeat and the lyrics trail off with a forlorn tone.

I guess it's a metaphor for how I feel life is, and needs to be. Life can never be perfect. Whenever my life seems perfect, I worry. I just get paranoid waiting for the other shoe to drop, waiting for some big disaster. Which is why when some small tinge of meloncholy shows itself, or some small crisis comes up, it reminds me that life is as it should be. That there is a balance. That no major crisis is waiting to strike. I like having a little bit of meloncholy in my life. It makes it feel real, feel tangible. Life has to have some aspect of a downer to make the happy times feel real, feel as good as they should. Without the sad moments, the happy moments would not hold the same flair.

Life is good, even when it's bad. It's that bad that makes the good REALLY intensely pleasurable. I think if there was only good times and never bad, life would be boring.

So... I have started up a new MMO. Lord Of The Rings: Online. It's pretty fun. If anyone on my FL plays, drop me a line. I am playing a Hobbit Minstrel named Rodinbrad on Landroval right now. Haven't decided if he's going to be my main yet, but minstrel is pretty fun, much better than a healer class in most other MMO's. Let me know!

Manga Rant

I have finnaly caught up to current with Negima, and am working my way through Tsubasa: Resivoir Chronicle and was looking around the giant manga sections at various Borders/Barnes and Noble stores in the area for something to sate my palate for new manga. This brought up my current issues with manga and how published/edited/stocked currently.

First is stocking issues. While I do LOVE having stores in the area that have walls and walls full of manga, It is a pain to try and find something along the lines of what you are in the mood for like you can with regular books. with the sheer volume of titles available these days, it's a pain in the ass to sort through isles of spine out alphabetized titles, doubly so if you are not a super OMG scanlation reading title crawling manga-crazy fangirl/boy. If you are like me, and just read what is published, picking up four or five manga a month, it can be frustrating. I don't like being one of those people that park themselves on the floor in the middle of the manga section (something else that annoys me about the fandom) reading through the first volume or so to see if I like something. I would love to see manga gaining different sections. With more publishers adding easy one or two word content descriptors, this is becoming something that would be easy to do. I mean if I want to look for Yaoi, I really want it to be all right together for easy sorting. The same thing applies to action, romance, comedy, etc...

Another issue I have has to do with certain publishers. Viz is number one on my will not buy ANYTHING from them list. Fushigi Yuugi was a series that I was very into at one point. I was collecting the manga, and at that point, they were $20 a piece. Then, halfway through the series they switched format. That infuriated me. Yes, they released the older ones in the newer, cheaper format, but I had already dropped a large chunk of money investing in a series that would end up looking janky on my bookshelves in two different formats. I sold em all off and vowed never to buy another Viz series. Thing is, they have done that to a number of series since them too, so I stand by not buying a damn thing Viz releases. The other company that is guilty of this is CMX. The reason they are going through reissues though is because of fan backlash. They edited certain series to make it more mass-market friendly and less "mature-themed". I have noticed this trend is starting to tun around though, because of fan backlash, so maybe they have learned and will avoid this in future releases.

My other issue is a personal one. I, like many manga fans, had a bias against OEL or "american manga". Yes, some of the early tripe that TokyoPop publised was not even stylisticly the same and definitely seemed weak. So I built up a bias where there shouldn't have been one. I mean I read and buy Megatokyo manga for crying out loud, a webcomic manga! That should have told me that yes, OEL manga is not ALL crap. So this weekend I broke down my "ewww OEL manga" bias and bought Dramacon. Loving and living the congoing life myself, this manga was good, even great. It hit so many true chords about con life I devoured the first book in one sitting at 2 am last night. I think now I am willing to give OEL writers a chance. If they are half as good as Svetlana Chmakova, they may be a worthwhile read after all.

Holidays.

I mostly hate this time of year. This season really brings out the worst in people. At least I have some people to keep me sane during my least favorite time of year.

Work has been hellish so far, I am just really REALLY busy. Next week is going to get worse though. One of my co-workers will be on vacation so from tuesday through saturday I will be pulling a 58 hour work week (before the holiday is calculated.) Other than that Christmas has been bearable. Gloria helps a lot with that.

So far I have been very impressed with the wonderful stuff my friends have found for me. Tonight I got these: http://www.amazon.com/Mond-Art-Neon-Genesis-Evangelion/dp/1421507676/sr=8-1/qid=1166854598/ref=pd_bbs_1/103-3815235-6926237?ie=UTF8&s=books and http://www.amazon.com/SuicideGirls-Missy-Suicide/dp/1932595031/sr=1-4/qid=1166854657/ref=sr_1_4/103-3815235-6926237?ie=UTF8&s=books. I really REALLY love my friends, the really get me.

All in all I hope to drink a lot this weekend and have these horrid days pass quickly. At least I have some really rad people coming over to spend the weekend with me.

As an organization that rallies around free speech issues in video games, you people should know this. You now look like giant hypocrites for suing over a parody, which is protected speech under the First Amendment. It really looks fucking retarded that you are suing Kotaku and EVERY blog site that reported this story.

I was very supportive of your organization, for protecting my hobby and my right as an adult to play video games that some people may think are not appropriate for kids. But I cannot abide by this hypocrisy.

Since the world cannot just stop depressing the hell out of me today.

I grew up in New York, lived in NYC for a while. I knew a lot of people there. My parents were at the tail end of their summer back in NY and (unkown to me for the next few days as I could not get ahold of them) had just left a day or two before to go back to their winter home in Florida. I was waking up for work at around 6:00 PDT and before that day I had used my TV as my alarm clock. I woke up to see towers burning, not quite realizing what was going on. I recognized the buildings and was trying to recall why they looked so familliar as I was still hazy from just waking up when I saw the second plane hit and heard "Oh my god, a second plane just hit the World Tradew Center." Those words shook me to my core. I was in shock the rest of the day. I went to work as if nothing was wrong, and spent the next few days after on leave from work calling around, trying to find out who was ok.

Today, 5 years later I am still left with the question "Why?" and wondering if we will ever have closure.

I would love to be able to one day ask, in person "Mr. President, why are we wasting our time in Iraq, when the people who attacked us on our own soil are still free, still threatening us? They have gotten away with this crime for 5 years. They have made us fear people with water bottles and people wearing shoes onto planes, doesn't this mean the terrorists have already won?"
